The U.S. Departments of Education (ED) and Health and Human Services (HHS) have completed their Listening and Learning about Early Learning Tour, which consisted of meetings held this spring in four cities: Washington D.C., Denver, Orlando, and Chicago. - Interview with Lead Researchers on Response to Intervention in Early Childhood

The May 2010 newsletter from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) features an interview with Judith Carta and Charles Greenwood, two lead researchers from the Center for Response to Intervention in Early Childhood (CRTIEC) that began in July 2008. CRTIEC is a 5-year project focused on developing and evaluating Response to Intervention (RtI) models for young children in order to increase the number of young children who enter school with knowledge and skill in early literacy and language. - Governors' Pre-K Budget Proposals for Fiscal Year 2011

Findings from Pre-K Now's latest annual survey of governors’ funding and policy proposals for publicly funded pre-kindergarten programs are now available online. Leadership Matters: Governors' Pre-K Budget Proposals Fiscal Year 2011 (May 2010) shows that if governors' budget proposals for FY11 pass, 9 states will increase funding for state pre-kindergarten, 10 states will maintain current funding levels, and 12 states will decrease funding. - Make Reading by the End of Third Grade a National Priority

On May 18, 2010, the Annie E. Casey Foundation announced the launch of a national campaign to get all children reading proficiently by the end of third grade. The announcement was made along with the release of a new KIDS COUNT special report, Early Warning! Why Reading by the End of Third Grade Matters, which finds that two of every three fourth graders overall are not proficient in reading and four of five fourth graders from low-income families are also not proficient in reading. Among other things, the report recommends the creation of an aligned system of education and care from birth to third grade.
