1. Free Web-based Module on Embedded Early Childhood Interventions

   CONNECT: The Center to Mobilize Early Childhood Knowledge is a project funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) to develop online modules on effective practices for early childhood professional development providers. These modules use an evidence-based approach to professional development and include video clips, activities, and handouts for instructors and learners. They are focused on young children with disabilities in inclusive environments and are designed to be used with existing curricula, coursework and other professional development opportunities. CONNECT's first Module addresses embedded interventions and is now available at http://community.fpg.unc.edu/connect-modules/learners

2. New Guide on Applying for Home Visiting Grants

   Child Trends has published a new guide to help states apply for federal home visiting grants. Home Visiting Application Process: A Guide for Planning State Needs Assessments outlines what needs to be done to complete the grant application process and provides data useful to applicants conducting needs assessments, identifying high-risk populations, and selecting and measuring benchmarks. 3. Promoting Language and Literacy Skills in Children with Down Syndrome

   Investigators at the FPG Child Development Institute recently published a new Snapshot summarizing the findings of a literature review on factors that may influence language development of individuals with Down syndrome. Based on this review, recommendations are provided that emphasize the importance of early and continued language and literacy interventions. 4. Linking Early Childhood and a Productive Workforce

5. Childhood Poverty Persistence: Facts and Consequences

   The Urban Institute recently published the results of a study examining the link between childhood poverty and adult outcomes. The report, Childhood Poverty Persistence: Facts and Consequences (June 2010), finds that 49 percent of children who are poor at birth will spend at least half their childhoods living in poverty. Children who are poor at birth are also more likely than their counterparts in higher-income families to be poor between ages 25 and 30, drop out of high school, have a teen nonmarital birth, and have patchy employment records . 6. U.S. Department of Education Launches New Data Sharing Web Site

   As part of the Obama Administration’s Open Government Initiative, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently launched a new Web site to share data about its grant programs. Data.ed.gov is a pilot program and presently hosts information on the Investing in Innovation and Promise Neighborhood grant programs. 7. Grant Notice - National Autism Resource and Information Center

   The Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), recently announced the availability of FY 2010 funds to award a cooperative agreement to plan and implement one National Autism Resource and Information Center.
